For runners who crave speed without sacrificing comfort, the New Balance Men's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoe delivers a masterclass in modern performance footwear. Whether you're chasing a new PR or crushing daily mileage, this shoe offers the ideal blend of lightweight design, responsive cushioning, and forward propulsion. In a competitive market saturated with lookalikes and hype-driven releases, the Rebel V4 stands out—thanks to its meticulous construction and cutting-edge FuelCell midsole technology.
New Balance has taken cues from elite racing silhouettes and applied them to a daily trainer, creating a versatile and breathable running shoe that performs just as well on long runs as it does in high-tempo intervals. The shoe’s updated foam compound, married to a carbon fiber-infused midsole plate, turns every stride into a launchpad. Combined with an ultra-light upper and precise lockdown, it delivers a truly connected, energizing ride.
What really makes the FuelCell Rebel V4 shine is its commitment to everyday runners. You don’t need to be an Olympian to benefit from this shoe—its accessible build caters to heel strikers, midfoot runners, and forefoot flyers alike. Let’s explore what makes this shoe a top contender in the world of high-performance running footwear.
FuelCell Technology: The Heart of the Rebel V4
Responsive FuelCell Midsole for Maximum Propulsion
At the core of the New Balance Men's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoe is its FuelCell foam midsole, designed to create a propulsive sensation with every step. This nitrogen-infused foam offers ultra-responsive energy return, pushing you forward instead of letting energy go to waste.
With a re-engineered EVA and PEBA blend, the FuelCell compound used in the Rebel V4 strikes a perfect balance between soft landings and bouncy toe-offs. You’ll notice the difference from your first step. It doesn’t matter if you're cruising on long runs or sprinting through intervals—this foam doesn't quit.
Lightweight Feel with Serious Power
Even with its bold underfoot cushioning, the Rebel V4 keeps things feather-light. Weighing in at around 7.4 ounces (men’s size 9), it’s one of the lightest shoes in its class. That’s no accident. The stripped-down upper, engineered mesh, and performance-focused build all work together to cut excess weight while keeping the support where you need it.
This combination of low weight and high energy return gives you the sensation of gliding above the pavement while still delivering enough punch to dig deep when fatigue sets in.
Sleek Upper Design: Engineered for Speed and Breathability
Breathable Mesh Upper That Adapts to Movement
The upper of the New Balance Men's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoe is all about adaptive comfort and breathability. Featuring a strategically layered engineered mesh, the design provides zonal structure in key areas like the forefoot and midfoot while maximizing airflow across high-heat zones.
Sweaty feet? Not an issue. This shoe's upper lets air move freely, keeping your feet cool even during grueling long runs or summer workouts. And with fewer overlays and reinforced mesh, the Rebel V4 molds to your foot like a second skin.
Secure Lockdown Without Restriction
Thanks to a bootie construction and gusseted tongue, your foot stays locked in place without uncomfortable pressure points. The lacing system is precise and minimal, eliminating excess weight and material while allowing for micro-adjustments. Combined with a slightly snug heel counter, it delivers a confident, slip-free fit—even on tight turns or uneven terrain.
Outsole Traction and Durability: Ready for the Long Haul
NDurance Rubber for Grip and Longevity
New Balance isn’t just focused on comfort and speed—they also want the FuelCell Rebel V4 to last. That’s why they’ve equipped it with NDurance rubber outsole zones in high-wear areas. Whether you're pounding pavement or running light trails, this rubber compound offers exceptional grip and abrasion resistance.
The design of the outsole also features strategically placed flex grooves, which allow natural foot flexion and smoother transitions from heel to toe. It’s a small detail, but it significantly improves ride feel.
Performance Traction Across All Surfaces
From slick sidewalks to gravel paths, the multi-zone traction pattern ensures consistent footing. You won’t slide out in a turn or lose grip on wet asphalt. That peace of mind lets you focus on your pace and stride—not your shoes.
Fit and Versatility: Perfect for Daily Training and Racing
True-to-Size Fit That Works for Most Foot Shapes
The New Balance Men's FuelCell Rebel V4 Running Shoe is designed to accommodate a wide range of foot types. With a medium width and accommodating toe box, this shoe strikes the right balance between a secure fit and toe splay freedom. It fits true to size, so there’s no guesswork involved.
Whether you’ve got narrow heels or wider forefeet, the mesh upper adapts without pressure or restriction, providing a custom-feel fit straight out of the box.
Built for Speed Days and Long Runs
This shoe isn’t a one-trick pony. While it shines in speed workouts—thanks to the lightweight foam and snappy transitions—it’s just as dependable for longer efforts. If you’re the type of runner who wants one shoe to rule them all, the Rebel V4 is a top contender.
From 5K races to weekend long runs, this shoe keeps your stride fresh and efficient. You get the performance of a race day shoe with the comfort of a daily trainer.
FuelCell Rebel V4 vs. The Competition
How It Stacks Up Against Popular Alternatives
In a crowded field dominated by the likes of Nike ZoomX, Saucony Endorphin Speed, and Adidas Adizero series, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel V4 more than holds its own. While many brands lean heavily on carbon plates or aggressive rocker shapes, the Rebel V4 offers a more natural, responsive ride without losing any speed.
It’s lighter than many of its direct competitors and more versatile—making it ideal for runners who want performance without compromise.
Who Should Buy the FuelCell Rebel V4?
Ideal for Neutral Runners Seeking Speed and Comfort
If you're a neutral runner who values responsiveness, energy return, and lightweight design, this shoe is tailor-made for you. It's especially ideal for:
-
Runners training for 5Ks to half marathons
-
Speedwork, intervals, and tempo runs
-
Daily training with a race-ready feel
-
Lightweight shoe enthusiasts who want cushioning without bulk
This shoe isn’t made for heavy overpronators or trail running, but for road warriors and racing junkies—it’s a dream come true.

Top Reviews
I have two pairs of this shoe, I bought my first pair after trying them on in a store and I immediately loved the way they felt. I bought my second pair (pictured) from Amazon because the colors are nice, and I needed another pair to use exclusively outside of work. I'm very tempted to buy a few other colors. My other pair is black and white, and I appreciate how the black is slightly purple and the white is slightly grey. Anyway, it's great these shoes caught my eye because they don't just look good. The soles have a soft cushiony feeling and the uppers live up to their name: "FantomFit." They are my favorite shoes for 12 hr shifts as a bedside RN, setting PRs in 1mi and 5k, and going out for food, drink, etc. Although these shoes are cushy, they are also responsive and fast. When running shorter distances I simple don't think much about them and they help me do my thing and yes it's in these shoes I broke my records for 1mi and 5k despite owning carbon shoes Nike Vaporfly 3 and Fuelcell Supercomp Elite v3. Probably because I'm more likely to take these shoes out daily. There are however two things I don't like about these shoes: 1) the upper material seems prone to abrasion, and 2) I'd get sore on long distance. I washed my 1st oair once and used a brush on the upper of the right shoe, little broken fabric filaments are now visible all over the upper hence I simply did not scrub the left one. In general both my pairs do not show much signs of other wear so I think the main thing is to not scrub the uppers. My second issue is that I could run more than 17.3 miles in these shoes. I had bad upper foot pain on two of my long runs in training for my first marathon in December 2024. I suspect, the upper foot pain may have been caused by form modifications from other pain on my soles then knees. Because of this the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 won the toss-up for my marathon shoes. With that said, 17.3 miles is quite a long distance already and there could have been other factors that may have contributed to my pain. I must mention that the Adios is a dedicated road-running shoe and is more expensive. I wouldn't want to work a 12 hour shift in them because they feel funny when not running. I also must mention that these shoes are awesome on the treadmill as well as the road/sidewalk. While $140 isn't cheap, I consider it a good value for how good they are and how how they compare to more expensive shoes.
Love this shoe! Over my course of running the past 25 yrs yrs I've done marathons, countless half marathons and triathlons and a few 1/2 Iron man, so I've tried everything under the sun. Been running in saucony kinvara the past 5 years and they are great but I was burning through them within a couple months because the bottom soles are crap and wanted to try something different. First run in this shoe just felt like I was being propelled forward, I only did 3 mi but the shoe just feels like it wants to go fast and each mi came effortlessly because of the plush ride and response from the shoe. I've done quite a few more runs since then and I still love it, this is my new go to shoe, we'll see how the bottoms wear throughout the miles but haven't noticed yet. Only thing I will say is the inside of the shoe is a little abrasive and can pinch, so if you're a low cut sock wearer like me you might experience a little rubbing at first but just keep a loose fit and all is good.
This just came in the mail, it was on sale for 109.99. At first they weren't great and were kind of uncomfortable, very snug. But I replaced the insoles from another NB shoe, and now they feel perfect. Really glad I didn't have to return it because the white/white color isn't common on most models. They are much more squishy than my old MoreFoamv3 and daily 1080v12s. High stack and super light weight, has a rocker shape bottom. These are my new favorite dailywear shoes. The best New Balance shoe and only 110 bucks.
